A look at what has happened in the last 6 months in our ongoing series on contemporary Main Street.
BAY
2015 Main — Neighborhood market, Santa Monica Farms, on Main St. in various iterations since 1982 (the building dates from 1923), has a new operator.
2116 Main — After a long construction process, Sevilla Veterinary Hospital replaces the former Green Dog Dental & Wellness next to the Pacific dog park and in front of Rover. Dr. Antonio Pedraza provides innovative veterinary surgery utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and industry-leading techniques.
HOLLISTER
2409 Main — Cold pressed, plant-forward, Pressed Juicery, on Main St. since 2014, has closed. But there are other branches - Pressed Juicery has more than 100 retail stores in 10 states.
2435 Main — Edgemar Restaurant & Lounge, a modern American neighborhood restaurant, opens this weekend. The restaurant occupies the Imperial Ice Company’s 1928 cold storage addition. Following the 1989 Edgemar redevelopment, Rockenwagner occupied this space from 1991 to 2006. A series of restaurants followed including: Salute Wine Bar, the notorious Brick + Mortar, and several versions of Tipsy Chef.
2449 Main — Korean premium skincare outfit Mixsoon has popped-up in the old Buffalo Exchange space at Edgemar. The pop-up thru August 23 is offering free beauty classes, giveaways, free medical-grade skin analysis and color match, and a free photo booth strip. Headquartered in Seoul, Mixsoon is a skincare brand launched by Jooup Hwang in 2020.
2503 Main — Cabin Creek, crystal store on Main St. near Edgemar since 2021, moved to the Venice boardwalk. This Main St. space has already been leased - Rich Angel Salon.
2525 Main — The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce opened an office in the former Quiz Daddy’s Closet space in the Merle Norman building.
OCEAN PARK
2612 Main — Paying homage to Ocean Park’s founding fathers of modern skateboarding, “Dogtown and the Legendary Z-Boys,” is at the California Heritage Museum through October 27.
2625 Main —Tattoo and piercing studio Apollo Tattoo Studio replaces action sports apparel store RVCA. For many years Santa Monicans have been generally opposed to the idea of tattoo parlors. Expensive permitting fees and zoning restrictions discouraged businesses from opening. This attitude recently shifted and the City Council removed the costly modified use permit (MUP) requirement for tattoo parlors. With the Main St. location flagship, Apollo Tattoo Studio plans to open three luxury studios within the next 5 years.
2645 Main — Coffee shop Go Get Em Tiger at the Sea Shore Motel was closed for renovations (plumbing issues), when unhappy Go Get Em Tiger employees formed the largest coffee workers union in Los Angeles. In the ensuing fallout, the Main St. branch permanently closed. The Montana Ave branch remains open.
2651 Main — Originally a 1-story retail remodel project, the under construction project will be 2 stories with residential over a ground-floor restaurant. The 211 seat restaurant is the fourth venture of Vincent and Mindy Kinne’s family-owned chain.
2665 (b) Main — Sports memorabilia store Beach City Collectibles, buying / selling / trading graded & non-graded sports cards, Pokemon and Funko Pops, closed.
HILL
2716 Main — Optician Eyes on Main is moving from south of Marine up Main St. replacing vintage clothing store Unholy Saints Los Angeles (which previously had been the Trendy Sunglasses space). Eyes on Main is an optical boutique featuring high-quality frames and sunglasses, friendly expert help, and a prescription lab on premises.
2721 Main — Kids haircut Super Awesome replaces athlete training facility Athletic Gaines. Galit Ptalis decided to leverage her business acumen and personal experience as a mother of three to create a modern haircut experience for kids.
2810 Main — For a brief moment, Nameless Bar & Nightclub, in the former Pink Elephant space, opened as a multi-functional venue serving as a sports bar by day and over-21 live entertainment club by night. You missed it. It is gone.
ASHLAND
2900 Main — Far Arden Essentials high-quality crystals and minerals online since 2013, replaces long-time Main St. jewelry store Accents Jewelry Design. FAE has been in the rock business since 1999 (a store in Upland), with an emphasis on geology, locality, and metaphysics.
2905 Main — The Main St. branch of Nancy Silverton and Matt Molina’s Roman-style Triple Beam Pizza finally opens - 3 years after Sam’s Bagels moved out. The name is a reference to the triple beam scales used to measure pizza sold by weight.
2910 Main — Puzzle Zoo, Main St. outpost of a local chain known for its wide selection of retro and contemporary toys for all ages, has closed. In 1993, entrepreneur and toy collector Jay Demircift opened Puzzle Zoo on the 3rd Street Promenade. Puzzle Zoo eventually expanded to five Southern California locations. The flagship location on the 3rd Street Promenade is still open.
2925 Main — As promised, bohemian fashion and accessories store, Free People, re-opened after their January 31, 2024 fire.
KINNEY
174 Kinney — Chef Wes Whitsell, awarded a Michelin star at Hatchet Hall in Culver City, plans to take over the 250-seat former Enterprise Fish Co. building with an all-new restaurant. While the name of the restaurant is still under wraps, demolition is underway. The kitchen is being built to Whitsell’s specifications with a wood-fired grill and smoker, and a seafood-centric menu with lots of vegetables. While very much a restaurant, the dining room’s focal point is a grand piano with unscheduled performances. “It’s gonna be like classic jazzy vibes, a place for a more grown-up crowd.”
PIER
212 Pier — Barbershop Shear Blue opened in the BPOE building.
3001 Main — Sameday Health opened in the former One Life Natural Foods space in 2021, and was one of the largest COVID-19 testing providers in the country. They closed in 2023, came back, but are now gone.
3009 Main — Stalwart Italian eatery Via Veneto moved their alfresco dining off of Main St. into a small garden patio.
3016 Main — The Redcar 2-story mixed-use project on the corner of Main and Marine is on hold. The lot has been re-striped for self-serve paid public parking.
MARINE
3101 Main — Eyes On Main is moving (see 2716 Main above).
