Influential surf shop Jack’s Surfboards expanded to Lincoln Blvd, Ocean Park in 2014.
Santa Monica only has a few high-profile surf shops compared with cities such as Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, where the competition among surf shops is friendly but fierce. [Santa Monica] is an underserved population. Jamal Abdelmuti, a Jack’s co-owner (2014)
The original Jack's surf shop was opened by Jack Hokanson in Huntington Beach in 1957. Hokanson sold the business in 1975 to friends Ron Abdel and his uncle, Mike Abdelmuti. It’s still a family business, with Ron’s brother Bobby becoming a partner in 1976. Despite surfing’s laid back image, the business side has been cutthroat from its beginning. Competitors love to point out that neither of Jack's Surfboards co-owners Ron or Bobby Abdel surf.
Southern California based Jack’s Surfboards has stores in Huntington Beach, Coronal Del Mar, Newport Beach, Dana Point, Hermosa Beach and San Clemente. Jack's Surfboards sells products from brands like Quiksilver, Billabong, Volcom, Vans, Nike SB, Channel Islands, Surftech, Nixon and many others.
Jack's Surfboards and O'Reilly Auto Parts occupy the large parcel (APN 4289-002-027) on the west side of Lincoln between Grant St and Bay St.
Like most of Lincoln Blvd south of the freeway, the property is zoned Santa Monica General Commercial (GC). For 100% affordable housing, the FAR goes to 2.0 and there is no limit on the number of stories (but a maximum height of 40 ft). To which State bonuses for low income housing can be applied. The 0.96 acre site is smaller than the 4.67 acre Gelson’s site, but larger than the nearby 0.44 acre 2537 Lincoln and the 0.32 acre Pacific Link properties on Lincoln.
Surfing heals. Surfing empowers. Surfing inspires. Surfing is magic.
This is the 4th post (Horizons West (closed), ZJ, WSL and Jack’s Surfboards) of a series on Ocean Park surf shops.
