The 7-room residence at 2441 Beverley Ave is constructed in 1912 for local contractor Thomas and his wife, Jessie Higgins. The building is demolished in 1973.
In 1911, Thomas Higgins1 obtains a permit for a two-story 7-room $2,500 house at 2441 Beverley Ave, atop a steep slope with west-facing views of the Pacific Ocean.2
In 1911, Beverley Ave is dominated by the Ocean Park Water Company’s 1906 reservoir, and the street is sparsely developed even into the 1920s.3 In 1911, 20 Beverley Ave property owners petitioning the City Council for Beverley Ave to be graded and oiled; curbs and sidewalks placed; a sewer constructed; and an arc light placed on the street.
Higgins lives there from 1912 to 1921. Then becomes a rental property.
The building is demolished in 1973 to make way for a large apartment complex.
Thomas Austin Higgins (1857 – 1943). Born in OR. In 1895, marries Jessie Chapin Goodwin (1867 - 1944) in Colorado. They have 3 sons: Elmer Craig Higgins (1896 – 1967), Marshall Baker Higgins (1897 – 1990), “Noel” Thomas Noel Higgins (1899 – 1976). From 1909 to 1921 they live in Ocean Park, then move to Santa Monica. Jessie is a Christian Science practitioner, and is involved in Santa Monica charitable causes.
The current 145-ft by 160-ft 2441 Beverley Ave property (APN 4287-004-022) is comprised of most (70-ft) of Lot 21 and all (75-ft) of Lot 22 of Block C of F.P. Howard’s Subdivision. Many of the properties on Beverley Ave overlap the subdivision lot lines.
