Every Sunday beginning at sunset, a group swelling to 100 or more cyclists embark on a dazzling LED-lit bike cruise. Starting at Windward Plaza down from the Venice sign, the parade takes the beach bike path to the Santa Monica pier and then heads back along Main St Santa Monica, through Abbot Kinney and back to end at the Venice pier.
Led by the event’s organizer, Marcus Gladney, the Venice Electric Light Parade (VELP) is an awareness group with a twist. The VELP slogan is “Get lit don’t get hit.” This rallying cry raises bicycle safety awareness in a positive upbeat way.
The parade is a high energy event with both light and music and it’s open to anyone and everyone interested in participating. There are no entrance fees and if you don’t have lights, you can get your bike “lit” on the spot with a custom wheel display for a small donation.
