Main St is originally named Lucas Avenue.
1887 Pico to Strand
Lucas Avenue begins in 1887 when Weid, and Weid & Haverstick subdivide (Blocks 4 and 5, respectively) of the 1875 South Santa Monica Tract. The 80 ft wide (property line to property line) Lucas Avenue goes from Pico to Strand. Later in 1887, Juan Bernard subdivides the South Santa Monica Wharf Tract and extends Lucas Avenue further south from Strand.
In 1884, W. D. Vawter subdivides (Blocks 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13) of the Lucas Ranch into the Vawters Sub Lucas Tract with Blocks A thru I
1892 Strand to Hill
In 1892, the Santa Monica Commercial Co. (the Vawter family holding company) subdivides Blocks D, E, and F (13 acres) of the 1884 Vawters Sub Lucas Tract and extends Lucas Ave south from Strand St to Hill St. As is the street standard in Ocean Park, Lucas Ave is only 50 ft wide in this subdivision.
1893 Hill to City South Limit
In 1884, W.D. Vawter sells Blocks G, H, and I (13 acres) of the 1884 Vawters Sub Lucas Tract to H.B. Perry of the Ostrich Farm. When the Ostrich Farm fails in 1892, Perry sells the Vawters Sub Lucas Tract Blocks G, H, and I to Francis G. Ryan, who quickly subdivides the property into Blocks A, B, C, and D of the Kinney & Ryan’s 1893 Santa Monica Tract. The Santa Monica Tract subdivision extends Lucas Ave from Hill St south to the City border. The subdivision map is unclear - but Lucas Ave ends up only 45 to 40 ft wide in this subdivision.
1895 & 1905 Name Changes
Lucas Ave is renamed South 2nd St in 1895, and Main St in 1905.
