Hawaii’s Holey Grail Donuts, creators of the taro donut, is expanding across the Pacific Ocean with two new locations coming to Los Angeles - in Larchmont and on Main Street Santa Monica in Spring 2022. Holey Grail is a Hawaiian-based donut brand known for its taro-based donuts fried fresh to order in coconut oil.
Founded in 2018 by brother and sister Nile and Hana Dreiling, Holey Grail began as a “Sunday Ritual” out of a red food truck in Hanalei on the island of Kauai. This quickly developed a cultish following which led to 45+ minute waits, live DJs, and people lining up at 6:30 am on a Sunday to try the donuts.
Santa Monica is already a very competitive donut market. In anticipation of their store opening, Holey Grail popped-up at the Platform in Culver City in November 2021.
Holey Grail replaces Ben & Jerry’s - iconic ice cream store at Edgemar since 1989. The store was Ben & Jerry’s first scoop shop west of Chicago and they were one of the first tenants at the Edgemar Center designed by Frank Gehry. It was never clear why Ben & Jerry’s closed in May 2021 - at the time a Ben & Jerry's spokesperson said the company had plans to find a new location in the Santa Monica area soon.
