There are 3 community garden locations and a learning garden in Santa Monica. With 73 plots, the Main Street Garden is the largest and most visible, encompassing an entire city block (2300 block). Main Street, the first community garden, was established in 1976.
Participation is open to Santa Monica residents, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis. Plots are assigned as they become available in the order in which applications are received. All gardeners must sign an annual licensing agreement and pay a licensing fee of $100 per year. New gardeners receive an orientation session. The bad news - demand for community garden plots far exceeds supply. It will take years before you are assigned a plot.
On the second Saturday of each month, from 9 am to 11 am, and with coffee and bagels aplenty, the Main Street gardeners gather for breakfast, often sharing stories and trading gardening tips. The garden gates are open and visitors can stroll the paths. There is directly adjacent meter parking in City lot #26 (150 Strand).
